We are circular

Coffeefrom is a project led by Il Giardinone social enterprise, which deals with environmental services in a strong inclusive logic. Il Giardinone’s journey into circular economy began during Expo 2015; from a research project in collaboration with Lavazza, Novamont and Polytechnic of Turin, Il Giardinone began to transform coffee grounds to create a new system for the mushrooms cultivation. This experience laid the foundations for a new entrepreneurial reality, so in 2016 Il Giardinone launched Fungo Box, the kit for the self-production of fresh mushrooms from cafes' coffee wastes. The know-how acquired led the team to carry out a new vision of a zero-waste and bio-based material. Thus, in 2019 the idea of Coffeefrom was born.

Our mission

The lesson we have learned is that coffee grounds store high physical and chemical qualities, although they often represent an industrial waste of many sectors. For this reason, our mission is to transform wastes into new secondary raw materials for infinite expressive possibilities. To achieve this goal, we have created a new Made in Italy supply chain where food industry, research, design, environment, molding, and compounding meet in a new industrial symbiosis.

Our project is based on a strong social responsibility. We put people first, starting from the integration of fragile workers in daily activities. Our goal is to generate a positive impact on local communities, to make inclusivity our distinctive element. Our vision

Coffeefrom is our vision to fight against organic wastes. Together with our partners, we study, experiment, and evaluate new forms and applications so that our innovation can be increasingly sustainable and technically performing. We always work with the idea that we can contaminate industrial practice, in order to create a new circular production model.

In words and numbers
Our circularity

For about 1 gram of ground coffee 1 gram of coffee wastes is produced. Here begins a new journey into waste collection and transformation. We are committed to making our values more concrete, combining research and innovation with a virtuous circle of relationships and collaborations throughout the supply chain.

Starting from the combination of aesthetics and functionality of Coffeefrom tableware products, design is a key point of our identity. The versatility of the material allows us to study and design customized solutions, able to respond to constraints or functional needs.

Coffeefrom innovation takes place both in the process and in the business model, providing a concrete response to 4 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (Sdgs): consumption and sustainable production; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure and partnerships for the goals.

The industrial coffee wastes represent a raw material of quality and value. Therefore, we recover coffee grounds to transform them into a by-product, ready for a new journey. The goal is the reduction of CO2 emissions, logistics and disposal costs, allowing all stakeholders to acquire common visions and skills.

Our social project is based on people: we integrate all worker categories in the circular and environmental economy scenario. In this way, we generate a positive impact on the local community, as well as raising awareness on social responsibility.
